The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Power-spectrum analysis of the final dataset and cosmological implications

چکیده
We present a power spectrum analysis of the final 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, employing a direct Fourier method. The sample used comprises 221 414 galaxies with measured redshifts. We investigate in detail the modelling of the sample selection, improving on previous treatments in a number of respects. A new angular mask is derived, based on revisions to the photometric calibration. The redshift selection function is determined by dividing the survey according to rest-frame colour, and deducing a self-consistent treatment of k-corrections and evolution for each population. The covariance matrix for the power-spectrum estimates is determined using two different approaches to the construction of mock surveys which are used to demonstrate that the input cosmological model can be correctly recovered. We discuss in detail the possible differences between the galaxy and mass power spectra, and treat these using simulations, analytic models, and a hybrid empirical approach. Based on these investigations, we are confident that the 2dFGRS power spectrum can be used to infer the matter content of the universe. On large scales, our estimated power spectrum exhibits the ‘baryon oscillations’ that are predicted in CDM models. Fitting to a CDM model, assuming a primordial ns = 1 spectrum, h = 0.72 and negligible neutrino mass, the preferred parameters are Ωmh = 0.168 ± 0.016 and a baryon fraction Ωb/Ωm = 0.185 ± 0.046. The value of Ωmh is 1σ lower than the 0.20 ± 0.03 in our 2001 analysis of the partially complete 2dFGRS. This shift is largely due to the signal from the newly-sampled regions of space, rather than the refinements in the treatment of observational selection. This analysis therefore implies a density significantly below the standard Ωm = 0.3: in combination with CMB data from WMAP, we infer Ωm = 0.231± 0.021. On acceptance of this paper, power spectrum data will be made available at http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/2dFGRS/Public/Release/PowSpec/

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey as a Cosmological Laboratory
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) of 230,000 redshifts of nearby (z ∼ 0.1) galaxies is now complete. It has allowed the 2dFGRS team and others to estimate fundamental cosmological parameters and to study galaxy intrinsic properties. Here we highlight three recent key results from the survey: (i) an upper limit of about 2eV on the total mass of the three neutrino flavours, and an intriguin...
متن کاملCosmological constraints from galaxy clustering
In this manuscript I review the mathematics and physics that underpins recent work using the clustering of galaxies to derive cosmological model constraints. I start by describing the basic concepts, and gradually move on to some of the complexities involved in analysing galaxy redshift surveys, focusing on the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky survey (SDSS). Difficu...
متن کاملClustering Studies with the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has now been completed and has mapped the three-dimensional distribution, and hence clustering, of galaxies in exquisite detail over an unprecedentedly large (∼ 108 h−3 Mpc3) volume of the local Universe. Here we highlight some of the major results to come from studies of clustering within the survey: galaxy correlation function and power spectrum analyses and the...
متن کاملThe 2df Galaxy Redshift Survey: Cosmological Parame- Ters and Galaxy Biasing
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) has already measured over 220,000 redshifts of nearby (z ∼ 0.1) galaxies. It allows us to estimate fundamental cosmological parameters and to subdivide the survey into subsets according to the galaxy intrinsic properties. The large-scale structure analysis of the survey has already yielded several significant results: (i) the shape of the power spectrum o...
متن کاملThe 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Spherical Harmonics analysis of fluctuations in the final catalogue
We present the result of a decomposition of the 2dFGRS galaxy overdensity field into an orthonormal basis of spherical harmonics and spherical Bessel functions. Galaxies are expected to directly follow the bulk motion of the density field on large scales, so the absolute amplitude of the observed large-scale redshift-space distortions caused by this motion is expected to be independent of galax...
